CAN Bus Mapping with OBDLink Scan Tools

We’re huge fans of the RaceCapture/Track logger. If you’re looking to tap into the CAN bus on your 2008+ production vehicle, it supports a number of pre-configured CAN mappings for popular models, such as the 86/BRZ platform, the AP2 S2000, the ND MX-5, and many others.

That said, we’ve received numerous requests to support custom CAN bus mappings from customers using OBDLink scan tools with SoloStorm and CircuitStorm, who aren’t yet ready to upgrade to a RaceCapture logger.

To help these customers, we’re adding the ability to configure an OBDLink LX/MX/MX+ as a CAN bus scan tool and providing an interface to configure and test mappings for custom CAN signals.

Please note that this is not support for custom OBD PIDs. Instead, it is support for handling raw CAN messages and mapping them to a number of internal data logger channels. We are also including a CAN message logger to help capture CAN bus traffic and use the captured messages to configure and test channels.

We are not providing any pre-configured mappings, so you will need to either reverse-engineer the CAN bus protocol on your vehicle or source information online via forums and user groups.

This feature is available in application build 616, which is undergoing internal testing. If you would like to help test it out with your vehicle, please contact support@petreldata.com and we’ll be glad to get you set up.
